Punta Gorda, Belize

Punta Gorda, Belize

Standing around your local fly shop and hearing all the amazing destinations to travel to is exciting, but can be frustrating if you have no idea where they are talking about.

Here is a little help from us!

Where is It?
Punta Gorda (PG) is located in the southern part of Belize near Honduras and Guatemala.  PG is lesser known destination compared to Ambergris Key in the north, which means very little fishing pressure compared to other saltwater destinations.

What to fish for?
PG is a Permit, Bonefish and Tarpon fishery (also known as a grand slam when you catch all three in one day).   The Belizean government is serious about conservation and all three of these fish are protected by law. You can also catch Trigger fish, Snook, Jacks and other reef fish.

Where to Stay?
In our opinion the only place to stay is Belcampo lodge.  This Orvis-endorsed lodge boasts a farm-to-table restaurant, top of the line individual cabins, its own rum distillery and some of the best staff we've ever met, including a world class chef.  Add an extra day to your stay to enjoy one of their other amenities like a snorkeling adventure with the chef.

What to bring?
8-10 weight rods, with large arbor reels holding at least 200 yards of backing.  Saltwater designed floating lines with 7.5-9 foot leaders.  We prefer fluorocarbon tapered to 8-16lb depending on the target species.

For flies crab, shrimp and minnow patterns work great, but ask your guide a head of your trip what he prefers.

Don't forget the sunscreen!

To get to Punta Gorda, Tropic Air from Belize City is the way to go.

Who to fish with?
The Garbutt brothers are the only game in town and for good reason. Look them up at GarbuttsFishingLodge.com

The Simms Guide Classic Wader and Jacket

The Simms Guide Classic Wader and Jacket

I’m a bit of a gear junkie. I love good gear and I love good technology. I can also tend to be a brand snob. When I got into fly fishing back in the day, I wore Simms boy’s waders, casted a Sage 9’ 5-wt Light Line and

Survival of the Fittest - Or Most Prepared

This is the current view from my office window…in Tennessee.  I moved here from Chicago four years ago because I wanted to be somewhere warm, without that white stuff, and without the single-digit temperatures. To say I feel like I was sold a bill of goods this morning when
