We call this one The Fluke, for two reasons.  First, we were trying to tie a fly that fished similar to the soft plastic bait with the same name.  Second, no one believes it works until it's hanging out of a fish's mouth. We have fished this fly for largemouth and smallmouth bass, pike, musky and even trout.  We fish it in a wide variety of colors from hot pink to olive. Use an intermediate sink line and fish this fly with hard strips and long pauses. When the fly disappears, set the hook! The recipe is for our favorite size.  It's easy to cast on a 7 weight, but if you want bump the hook size all the way to 5/0, it will still produce.

This fly is inspired by a lot of other great tiers out there.  If you're fishing one and Kelly Galloup walks by he will probably go "huh, I think I've seen something like that before."

Survival of the Fittest - Or Most Prepared

Survival of the Fittest - Or Most Prepared

This is the current view from my office window…in Tennessee.  I moved here from Chicago four years ago because I wanted to be somewhere warm, without that white stuff, and without the single-digit temperatures. To say I feel like I was sold a bill of goods this morning when
