The Moscow Mule

2 oz Vodka

1/2 oz    Lime juice

top         Ginger beer

Fill your mug with ice, combine the vodka, lime juice and ginger beer.  Stir the drink gently to combine the ingredients.  Garnish with a sprig of mint and a lime wheel.

The Moscow  Mule was one of the first vodka cocktails popular in the U.S.. Created in 1941 at the Chatham Hotel in Manhattan, the drink was conceived by three friends enjoying a drink at the hotel bar. The thought was to combine 2 ounces of Smirnoff vodka with Cock ‘n’ Bull ginger beer, that had just arrived from California with some lemon juice.

The mule is almost always served in a copper mug.  This tradition was popularized by John Martin who was traveling around the country selling Smirnoff vodka.  Martin would ask bartenders to pose with a special copper mug and a bottle of Smirnoff.  He would take two photos;  one was for proof of John visiting the bar and to show the popularity of the vodka to others, the second picture was to leave at the bar.

Survival of the Fittest - Or Most Prepared

Survival of the Fittest - Or Most Prepared

This is the current view from my office window…in Tennessee.  I moved here from Chicago four years ago because I wanted to be somewhere warm, without that white stuff, and without the single-digit temperatures. To say I feel like I was sold a bill of goods this morning when
